Frequently Asked Questions - SearchStax

The SearchStax® Frequently Asked Questions page includes the following approved question and answer about our Apache Solr Cloud services.

Why can't I connect to Zookeeper?

Clients often have difficulty using the zkcli script for the first time. (See zkcli download instructions.)

URL Confusion

New clients frequently consult us about zkcli script connection errors.

Each SearchStax deployment has its own Zookeeper and HTTP Endpoint URLs: SearchStax URLs
It is very common for a new user to confused one URL with the other. If you feed the HTTP Endpoint URL to the zkcli script, you will see some puzzling errors. (The Zookeeper Ensemble is at port 2181.)

Blocked Port 2181

A SearchStax user reported a connection failure the first time he use the zkcli script to upload his SOLR configuration.

The error message resembled this one:

Caused by java.util.concurrent.TimeoutException: Could not connect to ZooKeeper within 30000 ms

This failure was due to a blocked port 2181 (the ZooKeeper port) in the user's local firewall. Something similar can happen if a Zookeeper instance stops running. Please contact our Support Desk so we can check it for you.
